Association with any type of dog can be a highly enriching experience. At the same time, taking care of a dog entails a lot of responsibility. Pet owners should take special care of small dogs. Smaller breeds could develop myriad disorders as they age. Moreover, they don’t enjoy being left alone; so, you can’t leave your little dog alone for a prolonged period of time.

A plus point is that your small dog does not need as much exercise as a big dog might want. Smaller breeds such as poodles, shiz tu, maltese, and bichon frise are known to be hypoallergenic. They do not shed as much hair as other breeds of dogs do, and they do not create as much dander either.

Spare Some Time for Your Little Dog

Smaller breeds of dogs enjoy the company of their owners. They love living indoors with you, curling up on your lap as you work, or cuddling with you on the same bed when you go to sleep.

Your small dog will turn out to be more demanding that a big dog, wanting you to invest plenty of time and energy on it. Depending on the nature and temperament of your dog, you have to spare some time from your busy schedule just to socialize with it. As your dog grows old, it demands less attention.

Play with Your Dog

Give your dog plenty of toys and play many games with it; otherwise it will feel bored. Some breeds of small dogs, termed “working dogs,” need to perform small tasks. If your dog seems inactive or shows disinterest in its toys, you have to purchase new toys for it. Your dog will be happy if you play “fetch” with it everyday.

Never Leave Your Dog Alone

In case you have to travel, either take your dog with you or find a pet boarding facility where it can stay till you come back. When they are left alone, small dogs usually ration their supply of food to make it last. They worry themselves sick about their absent owner, and in such a mood, they could destroy your home. If you don’t want to keep your pet in a pet boarding facility, ask a friend to take care of it for some days or at least to check in on it daily.

Take Care of Your Dog’s Health

When small dogs grow older, they fall victim to a number of disorders. Due to their small size, they become victims of fractures, arthritis, or problems related to motor skills. Loss of hair, blindness, and loss of smell are also common aging problems of small dogs. Your small dog could live for fifteen to eighteen years; but it could suffer from various health problems during the last few years of its life.

A small dog can be your best companion if you desire a friend to have a stroll on the seashore or go for a long walk with. While smaller breeds of dogs don’t need a lot of exercise, they enjoy physical activity such as running, jumping, and playing. However, walking for about a block with your dog is more than enough because your dog could get tired and irritable. Certain breeds of small dogs such as terriers can walk or run longer, but they just don’t have the energy that big dogs have.

When you purchase a hypoallergenic dog, take into consideration factors such as the way you live and what you expect from your pet. If you are seek company when you go for short walks or if you want a lively friend to play “fetch” with, then a smaller breed is the best for you.
