By Abhishek Agarwal

Association with any type of dog can be a highly enriching experience. At the same time, taking care of a dog entails a lot of responsibility. Pet owners should take special care of small dogs. Smaller breeds could develop myriad disorders as they age. Moreover, they don’t enjoy being left alone; so, you can’t leave your little dog alone for a prolonged period of time.

A plus point is that your small dog does not need as much exercise as a big dog might want. Smaller breeds such as poodles, shiz tu, maltese, and bichon frise are known to be hypoallergenic. They do not shed as much hair as other breeds of dogs do, and they do not create as much dander either.

Spare Some Time for Your Little Dog

Smaller breeds of dogs enjoy the company of their owners. They love living indoors with you, curling up on your lap as you work, or cuddling with you on the same bed when you go to sleep.

Your small dog will turn out to be more demanding that a big dog, wanting you to invest plenty of time and energy on it. Depending on the nature and temperament of your dog, you have to spare some time from your busy schedule just to socialize with it. As your dog grows old, it demands less attention.

Play with Your Dog

Give your dog plenty of toys and play many games with it; otherwise it will feel bored. Some breeds of small dogs, termed “working dogs,” need to perform small tasks. If your dog seems inactive or shows disinterest in its toys, you have to purchase new toys for it. Your dog will be happy if you play “fetch” with it everyday.

Never Leave Your Dog Alone

In case you have to travel, either take your dog with you or find a pet boarding facility where it can stay till you come back. When they are left alone, small dogs usually ration their supply of food to make it last. They worry themselves sick about their absent owner, and in such a mood, they could destroy your home. If you don’t want to keep your pet in a pet boarding facility, ask a friend to take care of it for some days or at least to check in on it daily.

Take Care of Your Dog’s Health

When small dogs grow older, they fall victim to a number of disorders. Due to their small size, they become victims of fractures, arthritis, or problems related to motor skills. Loss of hair, blindness, and loss of smell are also common aging problems of small dogs. Your small dog could live for fifteen to eighteen years; but it could suffer from various health problems during the last few years of its life.

A small dog can be your best companion if you desire a friend to have a stroll on the seashore or go for a long walk with. While smaller breeds of dogs don’t need a lot of exercise, they enjoy physical activity such as running, jumping, and playing. However, walking for about a block with your dog is more than enough because your dog could get tired and irritable. Certain breeds of small dogs such as terriers can walk or run longer, but they just don’t have the energy that big dogs have.

When you purchase a hypoallergenic dog, take into consideration factors such as the way you live and what you expect from your pet. If you are seek company when you go for short walks or if you want a lively friend to play “fetch” with, then a smaller breed is the best for you.

Bulldogs originated in England. They were reared as working dogs that minded the cattle and acted as watchdogs. They were largely used for bull-baiting, but the sport was outlawed in the early 19th century, and the original bulldog lost much of its athleticism.

The English bulldog as we see today is small in stature. It is a wide, compact creature and has a thick, massive head. Its cheeks extend to the sides of its eyes. As is the hallmark of bulldogs, the skin on its skull and forehead falls in dense folds. It has a short muzzle and large black nostrils. The tail is normally short and the legs are stocky. The English bulldog gets its peculiar gait from these physical characteristics. In fact, to some people, the appearance of the English bulldog can be somewhat intimidating. However, it is a very gentle creature and people-friendly. At the same time, it is fiercely loyal and brave and can chase an intruder away at any time of the day or night. The English bulldog is the epitome of courage and affection. It loves attention and can get very friendly with humans if they shower it with love.

English Bulldogs are not very fond of exercise and are, more or less, indoors dogs. As such, they adapt easily to apartment life. They can be quite inactive without complaining. They are more suited to temperate climates and do not do very well in either hot or cold weather. They should be exercised regularly, even if they show disinclination towards it.

They are fairly easy to groom – they have a smooth, fine, shorthaired coat that can easily be combed and brushed. It is their wrinkles that need special care and cleaning. Care should be taken to clean the folds regularly. English Bulldogs tend to drool quite a bit and snore quite loudly. If their owners pay a little bit of extra attention to them, both the dog and owner can have a warm, long-lasting relationship.

Many people enjoy hunting for birds and in hunting it is important for you to have a dog that would help you point as well as retrieve the bird that is being hunted upon. Producing a dog that is trained to hunt is not at all an easy task and may require some ample time before the dog is very much ready to go into the wild with its master to begin a hunting session. In most instances, it takes a lot of training sessions, specific and specialized equipment for training as well as on hunt training during hunting seasons.

Basic obedience…

Before you go on training your dog to become a good retriever during hunts, it is very important for your dog to know basic obedience skills like sitting, coming when called upon, being quiet, staying and the like to ensure that he obeys your commands and that he knows how to control his behavior. A hunt is often spoiled or ruined by a rowdy or unmanageable dog that scares the geese or a dog that may run off quickly from a blind putting at risk a shot that could lead to a shooting disaster.

The needed equipment in training…

When you are ready to train your retriever for hunting there are several equipments necessary to ensure a good training and to obtain positive results. A foremost need would be a rope made of polypropylene measuring at about 30 feet more or less. The rope would be utilized to help the trainer control the dog during training and hunting exercises. With the rope, it wouldn’t be necessary for you to pursue after your dog and correct it if it strays during the exercise.

A gun is also necessary during training to get your dog used to the sound of gunfire. Most dogs fear very loud noises like gun shots. A handgun would be advisable over a shot gun. A shot gun is quite bulky for you to carry around especially since you will be hauling with you other training equipments plus controlling the lead line. You will also need dummies or what they call training bumpers to teach your dog to fetch. These come in a variety of colors depending on the training exercise you will be performing with your dog.

A whistle is also very important to call your dog’s attention. Quite often, your voice may barely be audible for your dog to hear especially if he has already covered quite a distance from you. A whistle produces a loud and distinct sound that could alert your dog to return back to you and not to pursue the search for the fowl any longer.

You would also need some help from someone to toss bumpers into the air as a simulation of falling birds. If you will be by yourself during the training, you may opt to utilize bird launchers instead.

Available also are dog collars used for training that administer a very mild electric shock to your dog. The advantage this offers is that it allows immediate correction of a wrong action or when your dog fails to responds to your commands.

In training your dogs for hunting, learn from people who are experts in this field. You can find a lot of sources online as well as detailed instructional videos that could help you with this task.

ferret as pet

If you are looking for a fun pet that is a bit different from the norm, you may want to consider purchasing a ferret. Before you do, however, there are many things you should know about ferrets and about how to properly care for them. This way, you can be certain you are truly purchasing the right pet for you.

The Ferret Odor

Perhaps one of the most important things you should know about ferrets is that they do have a musky odor to them. Some people find the odor to be quite offensive, while others feel it is not too overpowering or troublesome. Therefore, it is a good idea to spend some time holding a ferret and generally being around one in order to determine how you feel about the odor.

Even if the ferret has been descented, you will still smell the odor coming from its skin glands. So, don’t let anyone talk you into believing that you can completely eliminate the odor, because this simply is not true. Similarly, frequently bathing a ferret will not remove the scent. In fact, it may make the odor stronger because baths will dry the ferret’s skin out and the skin glands will produce even more oil.

If your ferret has not been descented, you may want to consider having it’s glands removed since you may encounter foul odors. Just as with skunks, ferrets have scent glands that will release a strong odor if it feels threatened. Although the odor of the ferret is far milder than that of the skunk and washes away easily, it can still be quite unpleasant to the owner. For that reason, most ferrets sold as pets in the United States have had their glands removed.

Keeping Ferrets as Pets

Despite popular misconception, ferrets are actually domesticated animals that have been kept as pets for hundreds of years. Nonetheless, you may have some problems purchasing a ferret where you live because the laws where you live may not recognize them as domesticated pets. Therefore, you will need to check into regulations in your area in order to determine whether or not you can own one as a pet.

Before purchasing a ferret, you should also become familiar with their little quirks. For example, the name “ferret” is derived from a Latin word that means “thief,” and you will quickly discover why ferrets were given this name. Ferrets have a tendency to take the items they find laying around the home and hiding them somewhere new, so be sure to keep valuables out of reach!

Ferrets are also very playful pets, but most do sleep for about 18 hours a day. They are most active from dawn until dusk, but they do have a tendency to change their sleeping patterns in order to fit within their owner’s schedule. It should also be noted that ferrets, which generally live six to eight years and have poor eyesight. But, they compensate for their poor eyesight with a sharp sense of hearing and smell.

The bottom line is that ferrets can make great pets. Just as with any type of pet, however, it is important for you to learn as much about these furry little creatures as you can before you make a purchase. That way, you can be certain you are purchasing the right type of pet for you.

The Yorkshire terrier, more popularly known as Yorkie Dogs, belongs to the small dog breeds. They possess long and attractive silk coat which is advisable to be well-kept by brushing on a regular basis. Likewise, other sensitive parts of this dog such as the teeth must also be brushed regularly if possible. Pet owners should know that when taking care of the terriers, they must have great amount of patience and attention and care to give.

Like many small dog breeds, the yorkie dogs need not be fed beyond that they need to take in. Overfeeding of terriers will often result in possible digestive conditions which can endanger its overall health. There are many excellent quality food products that can be bought for your pet dog; this assures you’re your yorkie dogs will be getting their necessary nutrients and vitamins. Of course, it is a must that fresh water is always available for your dog to drink.

The Yorkshire terrier is belongs to adventurous and intelligent small dog breeds. They are very lovable and loyal to his master and the people around it, albeit at times it can be demanding when it comes to the attention that his master and the people around shower him. And while the yorkie dogs are very amiable, they can become irritated in the slightest provocation. It can be said that this tiny dog is very brave and will not hesitate to face possible danger when he encounters it.

As already mentioned, yorkie dogs gets along quite well with humans, however they are only comfortable in the presence of people that they already know. They display hostile behavior with total strangers and even other animals and house pets. These small breed of dogs might be temperamental and oftentimes hostile to others, nonetheless, they only have so much affection and loyalty to their masters.

With this dog a rather aggressive and seemingly menacing behavior, you might think that the Yorkshire terrier is not trainable. On the contrary, this small dog breeds are very trainable; they can easily absorb the training that is given them. Still, with their cute stubbornness as the terrier’s trademark, you must have unyielding character as well as a wealth of determination in order to successfully train your yorkie dogs.

labrador retriever dogs

Most of those who buy dogs, seek for the companionship that these beloved animals offer their owners. If you are one of these people who seek for companionship from a pet, then a Labrador retriever may be a good choice of pet for you. There are two types of Labradors: the English Labrador and the American Labrador.

Characteristics of Labradors

The two types of Labrador Retrievers may be differentiated from one another through their physical traits. Although the Labrador retriever is generally known for being a muscular dog, the English Labrador is actually heavier and looks more bulky while the American Labrador is taller and thinner. These dogs normally come in three solid colors of black, brown or chocolate, and yellow. Moreover, there is a rare silver or gray color of Labradors that are believed to have been from cross breeding. This, however, is still being disputed and its origins are still debated upon by various groups.

Apart from the Labrador being easy on the eyes, it is also an ideal companion because of its innate traits. This dog breed is known for being loveable and very affectionate to both children and adults. Moreover, this a very intelligent breed that is very trainable.

In fact, you will be interested to know that Labradors, also previously known as St. John’s Dog actually aided fishermen of previous eras. The Labrador then was trained to jump overboard to help with the nets. Nowadays, the Labrador is still as trainable as ever although they are used in other fields of service other than fishing. Some of this includes drug detection and aiding the blind and the disabled to name a few.

Labrador’s Specific Needs

The Labrador retriever may grow between 22 to 24 inches in males and 21 to 23 inches in females. The males will weigh roughly 60 to 75 pounds when they reach their mature height, and the females will hit the scales at 55 to 70 pounds. If you are living in a small apartment, you should be concerned about this, especially since there are also male Labradors that can grow to weigh 100 pounds!

Regardless of the size of your Labrador, this breed is an energetic lot which needs a lot of exercise. They will do well in small indoors, but they will far off better in houses which have small yards. You have to take this into consideration because your Labrador may end up being overweight and they may suffer from such health consequences.

There is no doubt that your Labrador will be a loveable and good-natured dog in your household. However, to be able to maximize their good traits it is best to have these dogs trained early on. Moreover, they should receive lots of human attention and affection. These dogs need lots of TLC and they will easily reciprocate. Knowing how to cater to their specific needs will benefit you and your dog. After all, the Labrador will be your companion and you might as well see to it that you’ll be a good companion to your dog, too.

Havanese Dog

Havanese dogs are a breed that you may have never heard of. They are small dogs that were originally bred in Havana, Cuba. They come in many different colors and coat types. Most color combinations and coat types are allowed in shows. These dogs are considered an intelligent breed, and this breed is very easy to train.

If a person is considering getting a dog for his or her family in the near future, he or she would do well to consider a Havanese and seek information. There are several reasons they make great family pets. First, they are considered to be a hypoallergenic dog as they do not shed naturally (although they must be brushed). Second, these dogs have a mild temperament and even get along with young children, unlike most smaller dogs. Third, they are a healthy breed – especially when compared to many other small-breed dogs.

They are considered (like Bichons and poodles) to be a shed-free dog. This means that they shed very little, although they must be brushed. This type of dog is considered to be hypoallergenic because although they have dander, they do not shed it off easily. This adds one bit of work for a pet owner, because that means they must be brushed frequently to avoid damage to their skin and fur.

The temperament of them is another great reason to have this type of dog. Unlike most small dogs, these dogs do not get nervous around people and children. Most children (even fairly young ones) are able to play with this dog easily.

A huge concern among pet owners, particularly among purebred dog owners, is the general health of the dog and the dog breed. Unlike many dog breeds, particularly smaller dog breeds, the Havanese is relatively hardy. The breed overall, is a very healthy one.

When choosing a dog for one’s family, there are many factors a person should consider that they may not. Often times, it is tempting as for a person and their family to go to a pet store and simply got the cutest puppy. However, this method does not necessarily the best, as you may not know what that puppy will grow into.

pug dog

Multo en Parvo – a lot of dog in a small space. This Latin phrase is often used to describe the playful clown of the dog world, the irrepressible Pug. A tiny package of bundled energy, the pug’s bulldog-like stance belies his classification as a ‘toy’ sized breed. Even with his overtly distinctive looks, it is the pug’s amazing personality that sets him apart from other breeds.

Delightfully friendly, pugs have an aesthetic quality that is uniquely their own. Their wrinkled faces, short snouts, curled tails and solid bodies have helped earn the Pug instant recognition on the street. Few breeds of dog are as distinctive as the pug; the common use of the term “pug ugly” suggests how recognizable the pug truly is. Even within the breed, however, variations on appearance exist. While some of these variations are plainly visible to the casual observer, true Pug enthusiasts will often notice the more subtle differences.

The Pug is most commonly “fawn” (sometimes referred to as apricot) in color; a shade resembling a creamy tan. Fawn pugs have black faces and a single black band running the length of their backs. Pug which are entirely black are less common than their fawn counterparts, but are hardly rare. The infrequency of silver colored pugs leads many non-enthusiasts to believe that the pug is limited in shade to fawn or black. Apart from the color of his coat, a pug may be single or double coated. Double coated pugs have both a silky outer coat and a downy undercoat. In both cases, the hair is short and the dog sheds year-round, requiring frequent brushing.

Even closer inspection of the dog will reveal either “rose” or “button” shaped ears, the latter being described as gently folded over and generally consider to be the more desirable of the two forms. Lastly, one of the most playful and recognizable features of this unique breed is his curly tail. The tail of the pug winds into a tight curl slightly to one side and over his hip. The more tightly curled the tail is, the better and the rare double curl is considered perfect. Bobbing slightly with his perky stride, the tail wags freely but only uncurls when the dog is sleeping or distressed.

Regardless of the physical specifics of the pug, it is this breed’s personality that ultimately wins over so many owners. The breed engenders tremendous breed loyalty among owners. Not ranked among the more intelligent breeds, the pug is none the less lovable. His enthusiasm and eagerness to please are remarkable. Truly a lover of human company, the pug will usually insist on being as close as possible to owners, friends, or even total strangers – even becoming somewhat pushy if resisted. Of course, this quality in combination with the infrequency of his bark limits the pug’s effectiveness as a watchdog. Bred as lap dogs, pugs can easily become anxious if left alone too frequently or for too long. They require considerable attention to satisfy their appetite for company. Their appetites are not limited to company however. Pugs love to eat. In fact, for many pugs, there is very little they love more. For this reason and perhaps because of their irresistible buggy eyes, it is common for pet pugs to be overweight.

A lot of dog in a small space, truly the pug has won a place in the heart of dog-lovers and casual observers alike. The unique physical characteristics are only outmatched by his childlike personality and affectionate manner. While upkeep of a pug can be challenging, the rewards seem to more than offset the extra effort.

Executive Summary about Choosing A Pet by Tracey Dornelles

choosing a cat for a pet

I’m the biggest advocate for owning a pet … I think they are the most wonderful things put on this earth. They fun, cute, cuddly, help keep us active and many people don’t realise, but they’re great for our emotional health as well.

But .. before you make a new addition to your family, please consider some important aspects before leaping into the world of pet ownership.

1. Who is the pet for? Or more importantly Who will look after it?… how old or capable is the owner of your new fury (or scaly/slippery) friend? If you are buying it for a child think about whether they are really going to take responsibility for feeding, walking and cleaning poops etc. If you’re a mum of a few young kids do you really need the extra work or are you quite happy to take on a few extra chores for the sake of all those extra cuddles.

2. Another thing to consider if you have kids is How long will the pet live? The age of pets vary considerably. A goldfish could only last a few years (or in my case when I was 7 … “Bob” lasted 2 days after buying him at my school fair), whereas a friend of mine has a cat that’s turning 20 this year! So I guess the question is: can you explain death to your child or are you willing to take on the responsibility when the kids move out?.

3. How much exercise and attention do they need? Some breeds of dogs while looking gorgeous require a huge amount of exercise … eg. A Siberian Husky needs over and hour running each day at least and if not taken out will destroy your backyard! Also a hairy cat such as a Persian, while they look beautiful require lots of grooming, so answer these questions honestly and you’ll choose a pet right for you and enjoy them more too.

4. Will they be alone for long periods of time? Some animals can’t handle longs periods on their own and will become destructive if left alone. Perhaps buying 2 cats mean they’ll have each other to play with.

5. How much will they cost? Some larger breed dogs can cost more than $35 a week to feed, so consider if your budget allows for that … also factor in vaccinations, set up costs like bedding, council registration, obedience training, regular flea control, vet visits, pet insurance etc.

6. What happens when you go away on holidays? Kennel costs for cats and dogs can be a big extra cost come holiday time …or will a family member or friend be happy to baby sit.

If you answer these HONESTLY you’ll be happier with your choice of pet in the long run … happy pet hunting!

Executive Suammary about Exotic Pets Online by CS Swarens

exotic pets to buy

Recent years have seen an increasing trend regarding the popularity of Exotic Pets Online. Since most people are not free to travel the world in search of the perfect exotic pet, it will be beneficial for you to learn just how to find exotic pets on the internet. Fortunately, finding exotic pets online is not nearly as difficult as some people would make it out to be. However, it is not quite so simple as performing a Google search for “exotic pets online” either.

Unlike common domestic animals, there are often a great number of restrictions regarding the importing, sales and even in some instances, the ability to own exotic pets. Some animals that were previously considered to be exotic are not quite so mysterious, exotic or anything other than just another animal anymore.

Far from being an exotic pet anymore, they are now a regular food source and an industry rather than simply pets.

Whatever reasons you may personally have for wanting to find an exotic pet, you may have noticed that available selections are often very limited in any local exotic pet shops. Searching for Exotic Pets Online will definitely give you a wider selection. There are also additional benefits to searching for exotic pets online that you should take into consideration as well.

Many of the more exotic pets are more expensive and sometimes difficult to come by. There are many unscrupulous exotic pet dealers both online and in the real world. Searching for your exotic pets online will allow you to learn as much about the exotic pet dealers as it will about the animals themselves. Finding a reputable dealer is every bit as important as finding the perfect exotic pet.

Because they are exotic, these pets are often very expensive. Another consideration is that exotic pets available online and in the real world have special requirements. Most people don’t want to spend a large amount of money on exotic pets that may or may not have had adequate medical care, lack the proper documentation and may result in a financial loss and perhaps a broken heart due to the loss of a pet.

Before you go searching for the perfect pet or try to find a pet online gather as much information as you can to determine if an exotic pet will fit in your lifestyle.

Animal rescue programs are often wonderful and beneficial organizations that help find loving homes for misplaced, mistreated, stray and unwanted pets. The general purpose in animal rescue organizations is primarily to work hard in order to save the lives of pets in need. Rescue shelters strive to keep these loving pets alive, as they look for new caring families to take a new pet into their home.

The primary kinds are cat and dog organizations. Animal rescue organizations will normally accept pets from shelters or pet adoption agencies that have been there too long and have worn out their welcome. Animal rescue organizations primarily depend on donations and fund-raisers as their money source. Help your community, and help save precious animal lives by supporting your local animal rescue organization.

While there are a number of animal rescue organizations and pet shelters around the country, there is only one resource which you should always start with, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

It’s critical to understand that most free pet ads are from people who are giving away their pets for the following reasons:

They are moving to a place that doesn’t take pets.

It is perfectly okay to find free pets on your own, just remember that pets are never “free”.

The ASPCA is a wonderful organization that helps to promote animal shelters and rescue organizations that take excellent care of animals across the country. The ASPCA doesn’t technically endorse the shelters listed by this utility, but it provides the search function to animal lovers who need a resource to find local shelters.

Buying a pet from a local shelter is essentially like getting a free pet, because the fees to adopt a pet cover many of the upfront medical costs you were incur if you’d picked up the animal as a stray or free from a classified ad. Animal shelters take care of the upfront health concerns, so that when you adopt a pet from a shelter, you can be certain that the animal is healthy and well cared for.
