A small dog can be your best companion if you desire a friend to have a stroll on the seashore or go for a long walk with. While smaller breeds of dogs don’t need a lot of exercise, they enjoy physical activity such as running, jumping, and playing. However, walking for about a block with your dog is more than enough because your dog could get tired and irritable. Certain breeds of small dogs such as terriers can walk or run longer, but they just don’t have the energy that big dogs have.

Are you planning to take your dog on your next camping trip? I have a dog who mind-reads. She knows long before the camping bags come out. 1. Find a dog-friendly campground – do your research. Make sure pets are allowed. Are there any restrictions? Are there big open spaces for Rover to run around? Are the campgrounds sprayed regularly against mosquitoes and ticks? Are you required to bring and show your dog’s rabies certification?

2. Doggie Bag – what is unsettling to a dog is the myriad of unfamiliar scents, people, objects and spaces he suddenly finds himself in at camp. Comfort him by packing a doggie bag of all his favorite things: sleeping pad/blanket, snacks and toys.

3. Scoop the poop – bring lots of plastic bags and scoop it up just as you would at home. It’s the great outdoors, not the great outhouse. Some campgrounds have banned dogs because of the negligence of a few dog owners.

4. Dog etiquette – your dog should at least have acquired basic etiquette such as not jumping on people, coming when called and not barking at strangers – even weird strangers, which you are bound to encounter in a campground.

5. Last but not least, dog safety

• Don’t leave her alone in the tent. Keep her in sight at all times.
• Keep him hydrated. Dog and heat don’t get along. Water him often.
• Leashed. Just because a campground doesn’t require you to keep her leashed, you may want to in certain situations if she is apt to chase after rabbits or unfamiliar scents.
• He should have his id tag on his collar at all times. In case he does chase after that rabbit and get lost.
• Be familiar with basic animal first-aid for ticks, scrapes or poison ivy.

Campgrounds are one of the last few vacation places that still allow dogs. So, why not, bring her along, let her frolic under the sun, swim in the pond, roll in the grass…

Bulldogs originated in England. They were reared as working dogs that minded the cattle and acted as watchdogs. They were largely used for bull-baiting, but the sport was outlawed in the early 19th century, and the original bulldog lost much of its athleticism.

The English bulldog as we see today is small in stature. It is a wide, compact creature and has a thick, massive head. Its cheeks extend to the sides of its eyes. As is the hallmark of bulldogs, the skin on its skull and forehead falls in dense folds. It has a short muzzle and large black nostrils. The tail is normally short and the legs are stocky. The English bulldog gets its peculiar gait from these physical characteristics. In fact, to some people, the appearance of the English bulldog can be somewhat intimidating. However, it is a very gentle creature and people-friendly. At the same time, it is fiercely loyal and brave and can chase an intruder away at any time of the day or night. The English bulldog is the epitome of courage and affection. It loves attention and can get very friendly with humans if they shower it with love.

English Bulldogs are not very fond of exercise and are, more or less, indoors dogs. As such, they adapt easily to apartment life. They can be quite inactive without complaining. They are more suited to temperate climates and do not do very well in either hot or cold weather. They should be exercised regularly, even if they show disinclination towards it.

They are fairly easy to groom – they have a smooth, fine, shorthaired coat that can easily be combed and brushed. It is their wrinkles that need special care and cleaning. Care should be taken to clean the folds regularly. English Bulldogs tend to drool quite a bit and snore quite loudly. If their owners pay a little bit of extra attention to them, both the dog and owner can have a warm, long-lasting relationship.

Epilepsy is found in all pure breeds and mixed breeds of dogs. Epilepsy in the general dog population is estimated at .5 to 5.7%.

What causes this “hereditary” (also known as primary) epilepsy is not known for certain. A genetic basis for primary Epilepsy In Dogs is possible if there is a familial history of seizures; however, a diagnosis of primary epilepsy is not proof of a genetic defect. Only DNA and breeding studies could prove that.

Diagnosis of epilepsy is made primarily by ruling out other possibilities, and not based on diagnostics.

Some use the term epilepsy to describe recurrent seizures of any cause, while others use the term epilepsy to describe recurrent seizures not related to disorders of the brain or other underlying disease processes. Epilepsy can also be described as idiopathic — arising spontaneously or from an unknown cause.

Primary epilepsy.

Primary canine epilepsy manifests by a first seizure between 6 months and 5 years. Epilepsy between 1-3 years usually suggests a genetic factor. At 4 years and older, epilepsy commonly suggests a metabolic problem such as hypoglycemia (lower than normal level of glucose/blood sugar), cardiovascular arrhythmia, hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium level), cirrhosis or neoplastic (abnormal growth of tissue) brain tumor. Epilepsy In Dogs is also associated with hypothyroidism, an inherited autoimmune disease of purebreds.

During the tonic phase of a grand mal seizure, the dog falls, loses consciousness, extends its limbs rigidly, and respiration pauses (apnea). This phase usually lasts 10-30 seconds before the clonic phase begins.

Clonic phase.

The clonic phase involves muscle rigidity and violent muscle contractions. The clonic phase can include paddling of legs and paws and/or chewing, pupil dilation, salivation, urination and defecation. A dog with a mild seizure may have little or no rigid extension of limbs, paddling or loss of consciousness. Generalized seizures (involving both sides of the brain) are usually associated with primary epilepsy.

Petit mal seizure is very rare.

A petit mal seizure (abnormal electrical discharge in brain) in dogs with epilepsy is very rare and only diagnosed by specific clinical signs and EEG abnormalities. Signs of unconsciousness, loss of muscle tone, blank staring, and upward rotation of eyes will last only seconds.

Partial seizures.

Partial seizures are restricted to one area of the body, evidenced by muscle jerking, movement of one limb, turning the head or bending the body to one side, or facial twitches.

Complex partial seizures.

Seizures in dogs with epilepsy that are described as complex partial seizures are evidenced by bizarre complex behaviors that are repeated during each seizure, such as lip movements, chewing, fly biting, aggressive actions, vocalization, hysterical running, cowering or hiding, in an otherwise normal dog. Complex partial seizures include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal distress, salivation, blindness, unusual thirst or appetite, or biting itself.

Cluster seizures.

Cluster seizures are multiple seizures within a short period of time with brief periods of consciousness in between.

Status epilepticus.

Status epilepticus seizures in dogs can occur as one continuous seizure lasting half hour or more, or a series of multiple seizures in a short time with no periods of normal consciousness. Status epilepticus and frequent cluster seizures are both considered life-threatening emergencies, and can occur with either primary or secondary epilepsy, and may suddenly arise in dogs with no previous history of seizures.

When a cause for seizures can be established it is referred to as secondary epilepsy in dogs. Common causes of seizures in puppies less than a year old are classified as degenerative; developmental (hydrocephalus); toxins (lead, arsenic, organophosphates, chlorinated hydrocarbons, strychnine, tetanus); infectious (distemper, encephalitis); metabolic (transient hypoglycemia, enzyme deficiency, liver or kidney failure); nutritional (thiamine, parasitism); and traumatic (severe injury).

Dogs have incredible hearing capabilities. In fact, a dog’s sense of hearing is second only to his sense of smell. Dogs can detect sounds that are far too faint for any human ear to hear.

The first hearing dog was trained by a man named Anthony Blunt in England. He trained the dog for his own use. The first Hearing Dogs name was Favour. Since then, Hearing Dogs have become increasingly in demand by those who are deaf or who are hearing-impaired.

While most guide dogs for the blind are purebred dogs, most Hearing Dogs are mixed breeds that are rescued from animal shelters. The first thing that happens to a dog that has been rescued in order to be trained as a hearing dog is that they are given all of their vaccinations, they are spayed or neutered, and their health is brought to top form. Usually younger dogs are chosen to become Hearing Dogs, although occasionally older dogs and even dogs with disabilities themselves are chosen and trained as Hearing Dogs.

Hearing Dogs go through intensive training before they become certified. They are trained to respond to sounds – all kinds of sounds. The dog is taught to identify and locate a sound and then touch his owner and show him where the sound is coming from. This system is called the Touch and Tell system. The only sound that a hearing dog responds to differently is a fire alarm. If the dog hears a fire alarm, he touches his owner and then lies down flat. This is a signal to the owner that the sound is a fire alarm.

Hearing Dogs allow those who are deaf or severely hearing-impaired to live independently and to lead normal lives.

Causes

Symptoms

As you know from your own past or present experience, a lost or missing pet situation can be a very stressful time. These feelings are understandable because your pet is part of your family and you sincerely want your pet to return home.

In the information below, I have included some of the reasons that pets leave their homes or run away from their homes, what techniques I use to help locate them and why they may or may not return home on their own or be found. There is also a list of helpful tips at the bottom of this page that you can implement in conjunction with what I am doing to search for, and hopefully locate your lost pet.

It is never guaranteed that a lost or missing pet will be found. Nor is it guaranteed that they will return home on their own even if they are roaming freely. No animal communicator would make these types of guarantees. In my experience in working with lost animals, I have had a significant amount of animals located either because of the information I relay to their human companions from their pets or return home on their own with the instructions that I provide to them.

Why Pets Leave Their Homes or Run Away:

In addition to the obvious reasons (i.e. something frightened them, neglect or abuse, they are in heat and/or they have an overwhelming desire to go out and explore their surroundings) that pets become missing, there is also a not-so-obvious reason that I have found. Like us, animals come into this realm of existence with a mission. Some refer to this as your life’s path. Not all animals have more than one mission during the same lifetime, but some do. So, some animals, therefore, have been known to leave because their life’s mission may be taking them in another direction. For example, if your pet’s mission is to help their human companion through a major life change and that has been done, then they may leave their home and find another human companion where the same mission can be fulfilled.

The Techniques I Use to Help Locate Lost Animals or Help Them Find Their Own Way Home:

I use map dowsing in combination with animal communication to assist in locating lost animals. Dowsing has existed in various forms for thousands of years. In modern times, dowsing has been used to detect water for wells, mineral deposits and archaeological artifacts hidden in the earth. Using a map, this same practice can be used to determine the general location of the lost animal.

Why Lost Animals May Not Return Home or Be Found:

In addition to the obvious reasons why lost animals may not return home immediately, or ever, (their life’s mission is taking them in a new direction, they have transitioned, they are injured and have entered into a protective state while they recover from their injuries, etc.), there are a few more reasons that also need to be considered. There are animals that I have encountered that have been stolen and cannot return home on their own. I have also had animals tell me that they believe there are too many animals in the house and, therefore, they leave. One lost animal in particular told me that she would not return home because she believed that the predator (coyote) that scared her away in the first place will come back if she tries to return home.

Tips for Finding Lost or Missing Pets:

There are many things (in addition to contacting me as soon as possible for assistance) that can be done to increase your chances of being reunited with your lost or missing pet.

1. Create a laminated ‘lost animal’ sign that contains the word ‘REWARD’ at the top, a recent color picture of the animal in the center of the sign and the phone number to contact if the animal is seen by someone or found. It is very important not to list any other details.

2. Post the sign around your neighborhood, at local veterinarian’s offices, at the county animal control shelter and at local animal rescue shelters.

3. If you live in a major city with a lot of restaurants nearby, provide each restaurant with the ‘lost animal’ sign. After all, the animal will find food wherever it is convenient.

4. If your animal is micro chipped, contact the company (i.e. Avid) to ensure that they have your current information on file in case someone contacts them about finding your pet.

5. Visit the local county animal control shelter and local animal rescue shelters to see if your pet is among those at the shelters. Do this as often as possible because new animals come into the shelter frequently.

6. Place an ad in the local newspaper about the lost animal. Include the same information that you have on the ‘lost animal’ sign.

7. Check ‘found’ pet ads in the local newspaper and on local shelter web sites.

8. Canvas a three-block radius around your neighborhood from your home and talk to your neighbors about your lost pet description. But, unless you actually see your pet, please do not call for them while you are searching for them. The reason for this is if they do happen to hear you, you may be gone by the time they get to where you were when you called for them. Instead, either call for them from the front yard or backyard of your home or, if you do look for them by car, look silently.

9. If your lost pet is a cat, set up a humane trap, pet taxi or crate in a safe area around the exterior of your home (upper deck or outside porch) at night and leave it out until morning. Put a bowl of fresh soft cat food and water in the enclosure to lure the cat into the enclosure. Also, cover the trap with a towel, blanket or other familiar item with their scent on it. You may catch other animals as well, but you might also catch your own pet.

10. If you live in a neighborhood that has a homeowner’s association, contact one of the board members and ask them to post your pet’s information on the neighborhood web site and to also send out an e-mail to everyone in the neighborhood asking that you be called if someone sees your pet.

11. If you live near a location that your pet frequently visits (dog park, pet sitter, groomer, vet, etc.), contact the individuals who frequent those areas and ask that they keep an eye out for your pet.

12. Actively keep searching for your pet no matter how much time has elapsed. Lost animals can turn up weeks, and sometimes months or years after they’ve been lost.

For many female dog owners the decision of whether or not to spay your pet is one that is often delayed. This is regrettable, because through being hesitant it can often result in the optimum time for spaying being in the past.

What this article sets out to achieve is that once you have finished reading it, you will be able to reach a well-considered, and timely decision.

The first question has to be: What is spaying?
It’s a surgical procedure [ovariohysterectomy]. Following a general anaesthesia, a small incision is made in the lower abdominal area to effect the removal of the dog’s ovaries and uterus.

What are the benefits of spaying my dog?
1. Obviously your not going to be troubled by any unwanted pregnancies. It can, and does happen, and without your even knowing. Males are very devious Romeo’s, and your sweet little girl is by no means a shrinking violet once the time is right.
2. The heat cycle is over for good. Which means no more blood from the vulva on your floors and carpets.
3. It’s also the end to any behavioral problems that are associated with the heat cycle. And that includes the urge to roam.
4. There are several major health advantages. Including the prevention of a pyometra developing: A serious, and sometimes fatal infection of the uterus.
5. Similarly, ovarian and uterine cancers are a greatly reduced threat–because of the removal of the reproductive organs.
6. And as your pet gets older there is a definite reduction in the risk of breast cancer.

What are the negative aspects of spaying my dog?
1. There are the risks involved in the surgery itself. The anaesthetic risk, and also the risk of infection.
2. And often the big stumbling block–The cost. In many areas there are organizations that will help–You need to be pro-active on this one, and leave no stone unturned.
3. The same as with the neutered male, there is the inevitable weight problem. Most vets will recommend that you reduce the spayed dog’s food intake by around 20% on a daily basis. The real causes of canine obesity is exactly the same as it is in people: Overeating and a general lack of exercise.
4. There is an increased likelihood of urinary incontinence, as your pet gets older. It does happen, but it is very easily controlled.
5. There needs to be more emphasis on post-operative care than in the neutering of a male.

What about Post-Operative care?
Get your vet to provide you with an Elizabethan collar, or a similar plastic cone after the procedure. Several years ago, one of my dogs nipped her way through one of her stitches. She was close to opening up the entire wound–which would have had the inevitable outcome.

Also wait for at least 10 days after the operation before you exercise your dog off of the lead. I did on just one occasion with another dog, and for only a few minutes. This lead to complications, and she had to endure a further 2 weeks of on the lead exercise. These were mistakes that I made because I lacked any information about post-operative care.

The key question–When should I have my dog spayed?
A common myth is that a female should have a litter before being the spayed. This is unsubstantiated nonsense. The optimum time period is just before, or 12 weeks after her first season. By acting during this timeframe you will substantially reduce her chances of developing mammary cancer at a later stage in her life. Being a responsible pet owner it would be wise not to miss this short, but beneficial period to enhance her health prospects.

This short article should help you to reach a decision concerning the spaying of your dog. The eventual choice is yours. However, in the interests of your dog’s health and well-being, if you do go ahead, please make sure that you act at the most favorable time.

Sentry Dog- A guard dog used as a sentry is most often used to guard the outside of a large property, such as a warehouse or shipyard. The dog is free to roam on his own without instruction from his owner. Because they are trained to attack anyone who trespasses, they are the best possible protection for this type of situation.

Attack Dog- An attack trained guard dog is trained to attack and even kill if given the command by his handler. These dogs meant to be used as police K-9 or military service dogs. Dogs trained at this level are not sociable at any level and are not suitable as pets.

Protection Dogs are family dogs that will protect and defend their family in any situation they feel is threatening. Some of the most popular breeds for protection are, Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Giant Schnauzers. The Doberman is the only working dog bred specifically as a Protection Dog. These breeds are extremely loyal and become true family members. They can be socialized with children and other pets, as well as other family, friends and neighbors. These dogs should never be trained specially to do what comes naturally to them. They should be bred with special consideration for their natural instinct to protect. These breeds do however, need to be obedience trained and need to know their position in the family. They can be dominant, so it is important to establish your alpha role. Exercise is extremely important if you want to have a well behaved, well adjusted Protection Dog. These dogs need plenty of activity because they are big, physical animals with lots of energy.

The main distinction between a guard dog and a protection dogs is ultimately in the training. It is always best to seek a professional when you have determined what you need from your working companion.

Every dog owner has heard the word heartworm. But even though it’s easily preventable, some 200,000 or more dogs become infected in the United States each year. Once infection occurs, your dogs health is at serious risk-both from the heartworm itself and from the treatments that are available. First a few facts about the disease. Without going into the complicated details about this nasty parasite, all you really need to know is that heartworm is transmitted to dogs by mosquitoes. The bug bites an infected dog and then becomes a carrier, and transmits the disease to a new dog with a second bite.

Preventing a mosquito bite on a dog would be quite a feat. But that’s OK because there are easily administered medications designed for heartworm prevention that you should be giving your dog. Heartgard is probably the most famous-is a chewy treat that you give your dog once a month to prevent the disease from developing. The good news about Heartgard is that dogs like it, so they think you’re giving them a treat when you’re really sneaking in a prescription medicine. Dogs tend to snap them up. Don’t you wish all doggie medicine was that simple?

When your vet decides to put your dog on preventative, a heartworm test is going to be administered to make sure your dog doesn’t already have an infection. If the test comes back positive, that is very bad news.

First the facts about what heartworm disease can do. The adult worms live in the arteries and heart of your dog. As if bad cholesterol wasn’t bad enough, try to imagine what having a mass of a couple of hundred worms in your heart might do. Over time, if left untreated, your dog is going to get sick and go downhill. Problems he might face include a serious lack of energy, and congestive heart failure. Premature death is the eventual outcome.

Since you don’t want your dog to spend his remaining days feeling tired and lousy, only to face early death from heart problems, if your dog tests positive you’re going to want to go through the treatment. Its a necessary evil when it comes to saving your dogs life, but heartworm treatment is quite grueling. First of all the medicine isn’t something you’d give your grandmother. An arsenic based compound is used to kill the worms. The problem is, when you kill the worms their bodies break up into little pieces. These worm chunks go flowing about in the circulatory system until natural processes in your dogs body break them down. This takes time, and when its all over, your dog will be healthy and good as new.

But in the meantime, if your dog gets too active while the pieces of worm are flowing about in his blood vessels, sudden death could result. This is because the worms can get stuck in the blood vessels of the lungs causing something called an “embolism”. To prevent it, your dog must be kept as quiet as possible. That means he has to stay in a crate or small room 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with the exception of some bathroom breaks. Under no circumstances can the dog be allowed to run or play. The worst thing about this is that this process takes about 5-7 weeks to complete. Its a pretty stressful experience.

Those are the facts about heartworm you need to know. Prevention is easy, treatment is hard but will save your dogs life, and letting your dog go untreated means disability followed by certain early death.

Many people enjoy hunting for birds and in hunting it is important for you to have a dog that would help you point as well as retrieve the bird that is being hunted upon. Before you go on training your dog to become a good retriever during hunts, it is very important for your dog to know basic obedience skills like sitting, coming when called upon, being quiet, staying and the like to ensure that he obeys your commands and that he knows how to control his behavior. The needed equipment in training…

A foremost need would be a rope made of polypropylene measuring at about 30 feet more or less. The rope would be utilized to help the trainer control the dog during training and hunting exercises. With the rope, it wouldn’t be necessary for you to pursue after your dog and correct it if it strays during the exercise.

A gun is also necessary during training to get your dog used to the sound of gunfire. Most dogs fear very loud noises like gun shots. A handgun would be advisable over a shot gun. A shot gun is quite bulky for you to carry around especially since you will be hauling with you other training equipments plus controlling the lead line. You will also need dummies or what they call training bumpers to teach your dog to fetch. These come in a variety of colors depending on the training exercise you will be performing with your dog.

A tick’s bite barely causes sensation, unlike the painful bites from bees and mosquitoes. Dogs and other animals can be saturated with ticks and not show any distress.

Symptoms of Lyme disease in pets include fever, slowness, and sudden onset of lameness mixed with warmth, pain, and swelling in his joints. Sometimes a round area of inflamed skin around the tick bite may emerge with the disease in pets, even though it may be hard to notice this due to the thickness of a dog’s coat.

Antibiotic creams like Neosporin work as well on dogs as they do on humans. Black Tea

Lost dogs can give you a panic. The realization that they’re gone hits you like a freight train sending chills up your spine. Your palms become sweaty, your mind is racing, your forehead sweats with thoughts of their demise and your legs start shaking.

What is the first thing that you should do?

The first thing you have to do is to calm yourself down. Hard to do, I know, but it’s got to be done to get the rational part of you in motion. The second thing you must do is to remember what you read in this article about lost dogs.

Start by checking everywhere on your property. For the little guys, check every nook and cranny including in your laundry area. You’d be surprised where they will crawl into for a nap.

Once you have established that you have a lost dog, walk or bicycle one mile in all directions with a piece of fabric that they have laid with. A blanket or rug or towel will do nicely. As you walk or bike, your lost dogs will pick up the scent that you leave. Make your first trek the same route that the two of you travel during the usual daily walks.

Call their name and make noise with their squeaky toy because they can hear ten times better than we can. If you have used a dog whistle in the past with your pets, take it and use it. They will respond.

It is important to stop frequently, be quiet and listen for your dogs’ bark.

Carry with you a collar, a favorite treat and a leash.

Be sure to have a powerful flashlight even during daylight. You will be able to scour under porches and other dark areas.

Take the family dog that is not lost with you. Your lost dog will find the scent of his pal. The pal will alert you when the lost dog is nearby with its body language and may even start barking. The pal dog already knows that something is wrong and its’ senses are keener now. Pal picks this up because you are not “normal” at that moment and you’re giving off a scent that tells pal that something is wrong. Pay attention to this body language and if the pal seems to want to go in this or that direction, you should follow this lead. It may find the other best friend.

Back at the house – leave the gates open and place their bedding outside with their toys so your lost dog can be attracted by their scent.

NEVER leave food outside for them to eat because dogs can easily go two weeks without food. Leaving food outside will attract everything else that you don’t want around to eat it. How about skunks, raccoons, stray cats and other dogs decorating your front porch. Now you’ve given them a reason to come back again just to see if you are still generous to them.

Create fliers with pictures and spread them everywhere. Do not put your name and address on fliers. Your phone number and an accurate description are all the information that is needed. Always withhold one key piece of the description to yourself. I will explain the reason later. Fliers are the number one reason for the majority of pets being found. They really work.

Local animal control centers will get phone calls to complain about nuisance lost dogs and one of those calls could be about your dog. Call each of them within a five-mile radius. Since they are always driving around performing their duties, they also see wandering animals and one of them could be yours.

Call or visit veterinarian clinics within a four or five mile radius and leave your flier with them. If you can not visit them every day, call them daily to see if they have treated stray dogs that other people have brought in. If they have, go there to positively identify that it is or that it is not your lost dog. Your description of your pet will be different than other people’s description and only you can positively make sure. Don’t forget to call emergency animal clinics as well.

Call every animal shelter in your area each and every day because most “kill” shelters will euthanize three days later.

Find out what agency is responsible for picking up dead dogs along roadways. Take a photo of your lost dog with your phone number on the back of it to them. Leave it there because other workers may have collected the body but they are not present during your visit. Leaving it there will remind them to call you if and when they do discover your friend. If this agency is uncooperative with you, immediately head to city hall & raise a fuss but be courteous. You WILL get action and cooperation.

Place lost dogs ads in newspapers. Do not include your name and address.

Get on the Internet, use the keywords “lost dogs” to find websites that can help in your search.

When you get a phone call from a stranger that claims to have your pet, always meet in public places if you have any doubts about your safety. You must take a friend or two with you because you should never meet them alone. Never invite that person to your home.

Remember that one key piece of the description that you withheld? Ask the stranger to thoroughly describe the dog that they are looking at. If you do not hear that one key piece of the description that you withheld, it’s not your lost dog.

Money scammers will claim to be out of town but they have your dog. You will be asked to send them money to pay for shipping your friend back to you. Don’t send it because they don’t have your dog.

Once your best friend has returned home, be sure to notify the animal control agencies and veterinarian offices.

I must encourage you to never punish or discipline your runaway pets. They will have no idea what you are talking about and can not relate to the circumstances. I believe that they will relate their return home with your punishment. The next time they run, they may not come back.

We can save ourselves a whole lot of grief if we take precautions before a runaway happens. Walk along the fence-line often to look for evidence of digging and for other indicators that a repair is needed.

Do not let your dogs leave your yard without being on a lead even if you are right there with them. This is the law of the land in every city and small town in America. Some dogs will run just to run while others run because something has attracted them and there is no way they are going to listen to you yelling behind them.

Now is the time to take very good photographs of your pets by taking close-ups from several angles. If you ever need them for a flier, you’ve got them ready.

Your veterinarian can implant a microchip that is the same chip used within your local area. When lost dogs are found, they will be scanned to locate the chip and from there, they are on their way home.

There is nothing better than peace-of-mind with being “family again” once lost dogs have come home.

Colorado State University took on a study that shows cancer in dogs with long noses show cancer of the nose after being subjected to secondhand smoke. This is much more than dogs who have never been around smoke. Dogs that were affected died within a year. Short and medium sized snouts had higher cases of respiratory cancers, and flat faced cats showed this as well after being subjected to a smoky environment.

Tuft College of Veterinary Medicine completed a study of cancer in dog and cats showing a large link between types of cancer in dogs and cats exposed to tobacco smoking products. Felines with mouth cancer were repeatedly coming from homes where the owners smoke, while cats who lived in smoke free homes did not. Felines living in homes of smokers for over 5 years were at a higher risk of oral cancer. Cats generally were seen with cancer in the lymph nodes 100% more than nonsmoker environments. Over 75% of these felines perished within a year of the disease’s onset.

Many people are interested in volunteering a dog they own for service dog training and this is very commendable. Service dogs are those that assist the disabled in many different ways. Seeing-eye dogs for the blind, assistance dogs for the deaf or those confined to wheelchairs, and dogs with jobs such as this are considered service dogs and they do provide something invaluable to those that need this assistance the most.

But if you review the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) you may notice that it doesn’t really specify who may perform service dog training in order for a dog to be considered an assistance dog. This is important to consider because while service dogs must be allowed in certain areas when in the presence of their owners such as restaurants, on buses, and other such public places, dogs or animals that are not technically service or assistance animals do not have this same legal protection. So how do you know if the service dog training you’re investigating for your own animal is legitimate?

Keep in mind that while the ADA does not specify legal requirements for a trainer or instructor when it comes to service dog training they do specify what certifies an animal as a service dog. Specifically the disability has to affect a major life function and that the dog has to be individually trained to assist the disabled person. This is important because everyone’s disability is different and affects him or her in different ways. Service dog training must be individualized for that person.

The reason that this is important is because any establishment that suspects that someone is bringing their animal into their place of business when it has not completed any type of service dog training can be challenged as to what their disability is and how the dog assists them. If it’s found that the dog is just a pet and the person is not truly disabled they can be facing big fines!

Since there are not really any legal requirements for someone to perform so-called service dog training then it will be up to you as the dog’s owner to check their credentials and to make a decision about whether or not they’re qualified. Of course some institutions are just an automatic yes; for instance, Leader Dogs for the Blind, located in Rochester, Michigan, USA, has been in business for over 50 years and trains and supplies dogs to blind and disabled persons all over the world.

Guide Dogs for the Blind, with locations in California and Oregon, also has a long history of training and providing dogs for the blind and disabled. But when it comes to a private trainer or smaller company offering to provide service dog training, be sure to get recommendations and referrals to past clients and from those who have had one of their trained dogs placed with them. Ask for details about their training program, and if it doesn’t seem right then find another location.

Ringworm is one of the most common diseases in pets, especially dogs. Unlike its name, Ringworm is not a worm but fungi called Dermatophytes that thrives on dead tissues present on skin surface and follows circular path to spread infection.

Ringworm is an infectious skin disease and your pet usually picks it up from his surroundings like kennels, rodent burrows or from other animals who are already infected. There are about 35 species of ringworm that can affect dogs. The most common is ‘Mircosporum Canis’, which accounts for majority of ringworm cases

One symptom of ringworms in dogs is a lesion on the skin that looks like a rapidly growing circular patch of broken hair. The patch may look inflamed and may appear to have dandruff-like flakes on it. The most common areas where it can occur are face, ear tips, tails and paws.

If you find any of these symptoms, take your pet to the veterinarian. He may diagnose the disease by plucking hairs from the infected area and examining it under ultra violet light. On finding fungi traits, he may advise some anti fungal pills or topical medications for your pet

Humans need to take some precautions since ringworm is an infectious disease. Be sure to keep kids away from an infected pet, and adults should wear gloves when handling any items that have come in contact with the animal. Also keep your dog neat and clean and clip his hairs short since longer hairs promote unhygienic conditions.

Although, ringworm is a mild disorder the problems due to its infectious nature and slow recovery time can be problematic.

Arthritis is a condition best described as joint inflammation. While this is an accurate explanation if we were to drill down further we probably would consider it an inflammation of the synovial joints.

Synovial joints are located in many different part of the body and make it possible for both humans and dogs to move freely while serving in a shock absorbing capacity. Each synovial joint consists of ligaments, cartilage on which the ends of the bones move or articulate, joint fluid designed to lubricate the joint and provide nutrition to the articular cartilage, and a tough, fibrous capsule surrounding it all. Additionally, some synovial joints contain special pads of cartilage, known as menisci, which act as super shock absorbers.

Arthritis can affect one joint or multiple joint (polyarthritis). Joint inflammation can be accompanied by loss of cartilage orbony changes within the joint(s).

Arthritis in dogs may be brought about by:

* Age
* Overuse of Joints
* Trauma or Injury
* Infections
* Certain drugs (overuse of antibiotics)
* Autoimmune diseases

Regardless of the cause, the signs linked with this condition are relatively easy to spot and basically the same in most animals. Stiffness and lameness involving one or more limbs is often the most obvious sign of a joint condition. In most instances, dog arthritis becomes worse in the winter due to cold weather. While exercise is important for you and your pets health is tends to aggravate dog arthritis.

If your dog is experiencing arthritic joint problems you may have noticed their irritability and overall reluctance to run and jump. If your dog is experiencing an arthritic hip condition he may have trouble performing even the simplest task, such as walking or getting to his feet after taking a nap. Your pets may experience pain in the joints as well as swelling, especially if the condition was brought about by an infection or an autoimmune disease. Depression, fever, and loss of appetite could become apparent over time as your pet struggles with the painful challenges he faces on a daily basis.

Your veterinarian will arrive at a diagnosis by simple observing joint and gate movements, performing a physical palpation of the joint or joints in question, and possibly obtaining a radiograph or X-ray.

Once a diagnosis has been confirmed conventional treatment options are somewhat limited, stopping short of surgery.

On a personal note I have had some success with water therapy (swimming pool, tub) for joint problems. The water will make exercise less painful and who knows, perhaps with a little work it might become fun for both of you!

While conventional treatment options are limited there are some excellent natural treatment alternatives available which have shown promise for managing and reversing dog and pet arthritis.

Labrador’s Specific Needs

The Labrador retriever may grow between 22 to 24 inches in males and 21 to 23 inches in females. If you are living in a small apartment, you should be concerned about this, especially since there are also male Labradors that can grow to weigh 100 pounds!

Regardless of the size of your Labrador, this breed is an energetic lot which needs a lot of exercise. They will do well in small indoors, but they will far off better in houses which have small yards. You have to take this into consideration because your Labrador may end up being overweight and they may suffer from such health consequences.

There is no doubt that your Labrador will be a loveable and good-natured dog in your household. However, to be able to maximize their good traits it is best to have these dogs trained early on. Havanese dogs are a breed that you may have never heard of. They are small dogs that were originally bred in Havana, Cuba. They come in many different colors and coat types. Most color combinations and coat types are allowed in shows. These dogs are considered an intelligent breed, and this breed is very easy to train.

If a person is considering getting a dog for his or her family in the near future, he or she would do well to consider a Havanese and seek information. Second, these dogs have a mild temperament and even get along with young children, unlike most smaller dogs. Third, they are a healthy breed – especially when compared to many other small-breed dogs.

They are considered (like Bichons and poodles) to be a shed-free dog. This means that they shed very little, although they must be brushed. This type of dog is considered to be hypoallergenic because although they have dander, they do not shed it off easily. This adds one bit of work for a pet owner, because that means they must be brushed frequently to avoid damage to their skin and fur.

The temperament of them is another great reason to have this type of dog. Unlike most small dogs, these dogs do not get nervous around people and children. Most children (even fairly young ones) are able to play with this dog easily.

A huge concern among pet owners, particularly among purebred dog owners, is the general health of the dog and the dog breed. Unlike many dog breeds, particularly smaller dog breeds, the Havanese is relatively hardy. The breed overall, is a very healthy one.

When choosing a dog for one’s family, there are many factors a person should consider that they may not. Often times, it is tempting as for a person and their family to go to a pet store and simply got the cutest puppy. However, this method does not necessarily the best, as you may not know what that puppy will grow into.

Whenever I see an interesting news article regarding food and nutrition it perks my ears and the article I read last week about Chia seeds really piqued my interest.

“Ch-Ch-Chia”. Come on, you know the words to the song from those annoying Chia Pet commercials. So sing along.

Those things were kind of weird if you ask me. Spread some green mushy seeds across a clay sculpture, water it and watch it sprout green “hair”.

They made a slight comeback in recent years with more creatures to spread the mush on, ranging from animals to Disney’s Shrek.

But, did you know that Chia seeds are actually good for you? Who would’ve thought that a novelty item would actually turn out to have some tangible use?

It turns out that Chia seeds are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and protein. The ancient Aztecs ate lots of Chia seeds, including when they would go on long marches. The Chia seeds turned out to be a very good food for endurance, as well as staving off hunger. The fiber in the Chia seed expands in your stomach, making you feel fuller longer. As a matter of fact, Chia seeds can absorb up to 10 times their weight in water. That sounds like me after I eat a meal high in salt.

I’ve written before about how important Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber are to your diet, not only for fat loss, but for general health as well. Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent heart disease and other heart ailments, lower triglycerides, lower mild hypertension, aid with circulatory problems, depression, brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, skin health, arthritis and other joint issues, hair health, diabetes, immune system, muscle function, fat loss, and the list keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Chia seeds are also fantastic for diabetics because they slow down the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose because of the fiber and protein content.

The Chia seeds are also loaded with calcium, B vitamins and other vitamins and minerals.

If you’re a runner, you may want to give Chia seeds a try because they are known as the “Indian Running Food”. Not very politically correct, I know, but that’s beside the point. As I mentioned earlier, the ancient Aztecs would load up on Chia seeds before their conquests and long marches. They found that the seeds gave them more sustained energy.

I’m sure that you have probably heard of Flax seeds and Flax oil, but Chia seeds are actually more nutritious than flax in that they have more Omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and protein.

You can add the Chia seeds to just about anything. You can add them to your smoothies, salads, yogurt, cereal (both cold and hot), jellies, pancake and waffle mixes, sauces, etc. You’re only limited by your imagination.

Here’s the breakdown for 1 oz. of Chia seeds: Per 1 oz. serving they have approximately 9 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein.

Kind of interesting isn’t it? We keep trying to come up with more and more super foods, magic diets and prescription pills to fix what ails us, but the most nutritious foods are right under our noses and have been for centuries.

Not only things like Chia and Flax seeds, but fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole-grains, etc. Eat more of them and I guarantee you’ll lose fat and be in better health overall.

Multo en Parvo – a lot of dog in a small space. This Latin phrase is often used to describe the playful clown of the dog world, the irrepressible Pug. A tiny package of bundled energy, the pug’s bulldog-like stance belies his classification as a ‘toy’ sized breed. Even with his overtly distinctive looks, it is the pug’s amazing personality that sets him apart from other breeds.

Delightfully friendly, pugs have an aesthetic quality that is uniquely their own. Their wrinkled faces, short snouts, curled tails and solid bodies have helped earn the Pug instant recognition on the street. Few breeds of dog are as distinctive as the pug; the common use of the term “pug ugly” suggests how recognizable the pug truly is. Even within the breed, however, variations on appearance exist. While some of these variations are plainly visible to the casual observer, true Pug enthusiasts will often notice the more subtle differences.

The Pug is most commonly “fawn” (sometimes referred to as apricot) in color; a shade resembling a creamy tan. Fawn pugs have black faces and a single black band running the length of their backs. Pug which are entirely black are less common than their fawn counterparts, but are hardly rare. The infrequency of silver colored pugs leads many non-enthusiasts to believe that the pug is limited in shade to fawn or black. Apart from the color of his coat, a pug may be single or double coated. Double coated pugs have both a silky outer coat and a downy undercoat. In both cases, the hair is short and the dog sheds year-round, requiring frequent brushing.

Even closer inspection of the dog will reveal either “rose” or “button” shaped ears, the latter being described as gently folded over and generally consider to be the more desirable of the two forms. Lastly, one of the most playful and recognizable features of this unique breed is his curly tail. The tail of the pug winds into a tight curl slightly to one side and over his hip. The more tightly curled the tail is, the better and the rare double curl is considered perfect. Bobbing slightly with his perky stride, the tail wags freely but only uncurls when the dog is sleeping or distressed.

Regardless of the physical specifics of the pug, it is this breed’s personality that ultimately wins over so many owners. The breed engenders tremendous breed loyalty among owners. Not ranked among the more intelligent breeds, the pug is none the less lovable. His enthusiasm and eagerness to please are remarkable. Truly a lover of human company, the pug will usually insist on being as close as possible to owners, friends, or even total strangers – even becoming somewhat pushy if resisted. Of course, this quality in combination with the infrequency of his bark limits the pug’s effectiveness as a watchdog. Bred as lap dogs, pugs can easily become anxious if left alone too frequently or for too long. They require considerable attention to satisfy their appetite for company. Their appetites are not limited to company however. Pugs love to eat. In fact, for many pugs, there is very little they love more. For this reason and perhaps because of their irresistible buggy eyes, it is common for pet pugs to be overweight.

A lot of dog in a small space, truly the pug has won a place in the heart of dog-lovers and casual observers alike. The unique physical characteristics are only outmatched by his childlike personality and affectionate manner. While upkeep of a pug can be challenging, the rewards seem to more than offset the extra effort.

Taking your dog out to the woods can be a good experience for both you and your dog. While you can protect yourself from any bug bites that might occur, you cannot however protect your dog from anything that might happen. When going out in the woods, the first thing you should always worry about is ticks.

Ticks are a small 8 legged insect that will bite you if you have any open skin. When the ticks bite you, they latch themselves on to your skin in order to suck out as muck blood as possible. When they bite on to your dog, they will continue to suck the blood out of your dog until they can’t do it anymore. The best way to stop ticks is before they start. This means that you must spray your dog down with some kind of insect repellent before you take your dog out into the woods. Ticks are a parasite that sucks the blood right out of your body. These ticks hide out in the bushes and tall grassy areas.

The one thing that people are quite afraid of is the Lyme disease that ticks tend to carry. This disease can cause major shut downs in your body if you are not careful. This disease can also affect a dog quite drastically. These ticks with Lyme disease will quickly begin to shut down your dog’s immune system and eventually make your dog very sick.

If you find that your dog has a tick buried in his fur, there are a number of things that you need to do to help your dog get better. The first thing that you will need to do is to get a pair of tweezers. You cannot just pull the tick out with your bare hands. When the tick initially bites you, it will bury its head in your skin. If you just try to pull it out with your bare hands, you might get the head stuck in your skin which could lead to infection. You should position the tweezers around the tick as close to the skin as possible. You have place the tweezers there, firmly begin to pull the tick straight up. This should help to keep the tick in tact and make sure that he is not broken in half. Once the tick is out of your dog, you should burn or flush the tick. If you through the tick away, it will probably just climb up the trash and try to bit you again.

I’m the biggest advocate for owning a pet … I think they are the most wonderful things put on this earth. They fun, cute, cuddly, help keep us active and many people don’t realise, but they’re great for our emotional health as well.

But .. before you make a new addition to your family, please consider some important aspects before leaping into the world of pet ownership.

1. Who is the pet for? Or more importantly Who will look after it?… how old or capable is the owner of your new fury (or scaly/slippery) friend? If you are buying it for a child think about whether they are really going to take responsibility for feeding, walking and cleaning poops etc. If you’re a mum of a few young kids do you really need the extra work or are you quite happy to take on a few extra chores for the sake of all those extra cuddles.

2. Another thing to consider if you have kids is How long will the pet live? The age of pets vary considerably. A goldfish could only last a few years (or in my case when I was 7 … “Bob” lasted 2 days after buying him at my school fair), whereas a friend of mine has a cat that’s turning 20 this year! So I guess the question is: can you explain death to your child or are you willing to take on the responsibility when the kids move out?.

3. How much exercise and attention do they need? Some breeds of dogs while looking gorgeous require a huge amount of exercise … eg. A Siberian Husky needs over and hour running each day at least and if not taken out will destroy your backyard! Also a hairy cat such as a Persian, while they look beautiful require lots of grooming, so answer these questions honestly and you’ll choose a pet right for you and enjoy them more too.

4. Will they be alone for long periods of time? Some animals can’t handle longs periods on their own and will become destructive if left alone. Perhaps buying 2 cats mean they’ll have each other to play with.

5. How much will they cost? Some larger breed dogs can cost more than $35 a week to feed, so consider if your budget allows for that … also factor in vaccinations, set up costs like bedding, council registration, obedience training, regular flea control, vet visits, pet insurance etc.

6. What happens when you go away on holidays? Kennel costs for cats and dogs can be a big extra cost come holiday time …or will a family member or friend be happy to baby sit.

If you answer these HONESTLY you’ll be happier with your choice of pet in the long run … happy pet hunting!

The Pet Dog Trainer needs to know how to train any breed of dog to be a good pet. Although some trainers start out in a particular field such as Sport Dog Training, or Police Dog Training, and then move on to Pet Dog Training, this requires an addition to their education.

In our opinion, the best education that a Pet Dog Trainer can get is working for another Pet Dog Trainer for a minimum of one to two years. First, you don’t want your dog to be an experiment for an inexperienced trainer.

There are three main schools of thought in dog training. The third and final style of training is the far right extreme of using a shock collar as the basis or part of Pet Dog Training. The possible exception to this rule is extreme dog on dog aggression.

In Kennel Training: This form of training is the most popular with extraordinarily busy people. You drop your dog off at a kennel facility, and pick him up 3-4 weeks later trained. Make sure that the trainer actually owns the facility or you may end up with a disappearing trainer or worse a disappearing dog if the owner of the kennel and the trainer part ways.

Since the trainer has no say in the employees performance they can be undoing the training as fast as the trainer is training. It is still the owners responsibility to work the dog and establish parameters for the dogs behavior within the home environment. Not all dogs are. Your trainer should council you as to what type of training is right for your particular schedule and your dogs particular issues.

As a pet owner, one of my worst fears is having my dog or cat hit by a car. In the Vet world, it is called HBC.

SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

You may see it, and then its obvious. Often though cats and dogs are HBC’s and the only external signs are a few scrapes. They may be limping, or have difficulty breathing.

SOLUTIONS:

CALL YOUR VET ASAP.

ASSESS BREATHING.

Lung Injuries often occur from car accidents. Does your pet appear to be breathing normally, or is she labored, breathing with her mouth open. A common injury is pneumothorax, in which a part of the lung collapses, causing progressive respiratory distress. (Mouth breathing, large, deep chest or stomach movements in an attempt to get air into the lungs). In this case you need IMMEDIATE veterinary care.

CHECK HEARTBEAT.

The easiest way is to place your ear against the chest behind the left elbow. You can also feel for a pulse by placing your fingers in the groin (inside the thigh of the back legs).

CPR – If your pet is non-responsive, then go through the CPR steps.

1. Assess responsiveness

2. Establish a patent airway

3. Perform rescue breathing

4. Cardiac massage – establishing circulation

You will have to exert a lot of force with large dogs, but don’t worry about breaking ribs for they will heal. After every minute, stop and check for a pulse or breathing.

Continue heart massage compressions and the rescue breathing until you hear a heart beat and feel regular breathing. ONCE your pet is breathing and his heart is beating, CALL your veterinarian immediately!

GUM COLOR.

This is a great measure of blood pressure, to determine if shock is present, and to evaluate for internal bleeding. The gums should be a healthy pink color. If they are pale, then your pet needs to be treated for shock and transported to a vet ASAP.

STOP BLEEDING.

If there are obvious areas of bleeding, then stop them NOW. Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. Hold this in place for at least 5 minutes.

COVER WOUNDS.

Covering open wounds will keep them clean and help prevent infection. Bandage material is preferable, but a towel will work fine until you get to the vet.

SUPPORT A FRACTURE.

If your pet is not using a leg, suspect a fracture. If the leg is dangling, and bent at an unusual angle, then you should attempt to immobilize it until you get veterinary care. Place a towel around the leg. Wrap the inside of the leg with material to partially splint the limb: newspaper, magazine or even bubble wrap. Cover this with tape to keep the newspaper next to the towel.

MOVE WITH CARE.

Carefully transport your pet. A firm surface works best. If possible, put your pet on a wooden board. This is best done by first gently sliding him onto a sheet, then sliding the sheet onto the board. If you don’t have any of this available, don’t worry, the most important thing is rapid transport to your vet. Lift your pet by cradling him (left arm around his chest and right arm around his rear).

This discussion about car accidents leads me to the final part of this report.. Every pet owner should have a Pet First Aid Kit.

Here are some basic items that all first aid kits should contain.

1. Rectal Thermometer – the newer electronic kind works best. The electronic ones beep when they are finished registering a temperature. They are slightly smaller than the glass kind. They do not break as easily. They can be covered with thin sleeves to halt the spread of germs. They can also be used as oral thermometers. They do have a battery which will need replacing and they are more expensive then the glass ones. [normal canine temperature - 100.5 to 102.5F]

2. Lubricating jelly to lubricate thermometer

3. Gel packs that can be sued for hot and cold compresses

4. Adhesive tape to secure bandages – both non-stick tape and water proof tape

5. Blunt tipped scissors (a must for animal first aid – used for cutting hair away from wounds)

6. Bandage scissors

7. Splints

8. Alcohol swabs to sterilize instruments or small areas of skin

9. Antibiotic ointment for wounds (not for eyes) (ie. Polysporin, for non puncture type wounds)

10. Contact lens solution for rinsing eyes, to clean wounds (water can be substituted)

11. Cotton swabs (ie. Q-tips)

12. Hibitane – a mild antibacterial soap for cleaning skin, wounds

13. Sterile cotton or cotton balls

14. Sterile Gauze Pads (the larger 4″ size is better since it can easily be cut smaller if necessary)

15. Rolls of gauze or cling gauze bandage(1-2″)

16. Hydrogen Peroxide – 10 ml every 15 minutes to induce vomiting in animals that have ingested a non-caustic poison

17. Razor Blade can also be used to shave away hair and abrade the skin following a tick bite.

18. Stockingette to protect bandage on leg or foot

19. Rubber bulb ear syringe – used for flushing eyes, ears, wounds

20. Forceps and/or tweezers

21. Self-adhesive bandage (ie. Vetrap)

22. Numbers for the Animal Poison Hotline & Poison Control for Pets (800/548-2423 or 900/680-0000 both numbers charge a fee). The National Poison Control Hotlines for humans should also be included.

4 Easy Steps To Emergency Pet Stain Removal

1. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove. It isn’t always convenient to clean up a pet stain, but your life will be much easier if you take care of it immediately.

2. Use the right equipment. Use a small, hand-held carpet spotting machine or wet vacuum to extract the urine, vomit, or feces. If you find the stain while it is still damp, it is important to extract the liquid BEFORE rinsing or adding a spot remover. Some popular brands to look for are Bissel, Little Devil, and Little Green Machine. For a wet vacuum, go to any hardware department and ask for wet vacs or shop vacs.

3. Use the proper cleaning agent AFTER the liquid has been removed. Use a low residue Spot Remover if the stain is fresh or an enzyme spot remover if the stain has been in the fiber for more than a few hours. A mixture of white vinegar diluted at a 1 to 3 ratio will also work in a pinch. Never use bleach. If you are using an enzyme, allow it to dwell for at least 20 minutes or according to the label. An enzyme actually digests the bacteria associated with the odor in urine and works well for spots that have been in the carpet for more than a few hours.

4. Rinse the spot with plain water and extract the water with your wet vacuum or carpet-spotting machine. This can be done by rinsing with water from your Spot Removal machine or simply pouring a glass of water on the area and extracting with your wet vacuum.

What to do if these steps don’t work?

Often, the spot will be even bigger and darker when it returns. Many Spot Removers can leave excess residue in the carpet that attracts soil. If you experience this phenomenon of a mysterious spot returning, simply pour a cup of water on the area and extract with your carpet spotter or wet vacuum. If the spot returns again, rinse it again. If you continue to have problems with returning spots, try a different Spot Removal product.

So now you’ve removed most of the stain and the odor. Hydrogen peroxide gentles fades discolorations from urine and vomit stains and is available in most drug stores. You’re now armed with the right information and right tools that will make taking care of the accident a breeze.

There are a few tips you must know when cleaning up these stains to keep from causing permanent damage to your carpet.

Pet Urine

1. Blot urine with a very absorbent towel, pressing the towel with your heal, while standing on one foot. This allows you to soak up the urine from the pad and the carpet. Do this 3 or 4 times with new places on the towel.

2. After the urine has been removed, spray a solution of white vinegar and water (50/50 mixture.) Leave in the carpet. This neutralizes the acid in the urine that could discolor and distort the carpet fibers.

3. Never rub or scrub the carpet, while cleaning up pet urine or any other stain. This only pushes the stain into the carpet fibers and padding.

Pet Feces

1. Wait for feces to dry!!! Do not even think about any type of clean up until the poop has dried completely. If you do, the feces will absorb into the fibers and cause permanent discoloration.

2. Once feces has dried (about 24 hours) pick up and discard. What you see left on the carpet needs to be cleaned up by a professional.

3. Once the professional arrives at your house, make sure he doesn’t apply any soap or other chemicals to the remaining feces. They first need to extract the stain with clean hot water. If some of the stain remains after going over it 4 to 5 times, some detergent can be applied and extracted.

4. After feces has been completely cleaned up, a sanitizer needs to be applied to kill any remaining bacteria.

Applying these steps when cleaning up pet stains will save you costly replacement and extend the life of your carpet.

• Length: Distance from the pets nose to base of tail.
• Width: Distance from the top of the back to the hind stifle (knee).
• Height: When the pet is laying on their side this will be how high they are.

The length, width and height measurements can then be used to select a casket with an appropriate inside dimension.

It is always recommend to select a Casket that is at least an inch or two larger then the measurements taken. This will help to accommodate any liner used and make the transfer as simple as possible.

Sealing – How the Caskets Close

When selecting a Casket there are a variety of ways that each casket will seal. Below we list some of the available Caskets and how they seal.

Friction Fit

Friction fit caskets are sealed with a lid that is simply pressed on. In addition a double sided adhesive is provided to help create a tighter seal. The blue adhesive is shown on the perimeter of the casket to the right.

Tongue & Groove

In a tongue and groove seal the lid has a ridge which will seat in groove. This seal can be further enhanced by placing a small amount of adhesive in the groove. If choosing to use an adhesive we recommend first checking to make sure the adhesive is ’safe’ for the material. Certain materials such as polystyrene can be effected by the glue. For polystyrene we recommend the use of silicone adhesive.

Adhesive

Adhesive sealing caskets allow the top to be sealed with the use of an adhesive tape or glue. This simple method allows for the adhesive to be placed along the outer perimeter of the casket so the lid can be gently pressed on. The photo to the right shows the edge surface of the casket.

Set Top

The biodegradable casket available simply uses a lid which is placed over the top of the casket. This lid is not sealed with the use of any non-organic materials and offers temporary protection until the casket naturally goes back into the environment.

Materials – Biodegradable vs. Non-Biodegradable

When choosing a casket there are two primary differences in the materials; biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable caskets will naturally deteriorate over time. One of the primary reasons for choosing a biodegradable casket is for their ecological and environmental impact. Placing a pet in a biodegradable casket will allow the body to return to the environment as the result of natural processes. Biodegradable caskets are typically made from organic materials such as tree bark or paper.

The non-biodegradable caskets are used commonly to help preserve the body and keep any outside elements separated. The non-biodegradable caskets such as the Eternal Rest will likely take hundreds of years to naturally break down. The most common used materials in non-biodegradable caskets are polyurethane or high-density polystyrene.

Anyone can claim anything, chances are if someone is asking for payment by W.Union to another country, they are not legitimate.
